The Boston Social Tools Summit was hailed as an innovative event that brought together leading experts with marketers across the spectrum of enterprise, non-profit, consultants, and agencies. The event was trending on Twitter worldwide (in between “Nepal earthquake” and “Verizon buys AOL”) with 80 million impressions for #SocialTools15 in May, including 6,700 tweets and 1,700 users. I am a social strategist, author, adjunct professor, and avid 49ers and Lakers fan with over 15 years experience helping organizations solve marketing challenges. In all my experience working, teaching and writing about digital marketing and social business, I've learned that consumers are real people with real passions, not just target markets or segments. In order to turn followers into actual friends, I believe brands need to listen more than they talk, and social media provides an easy and powerful way to connect with them, personally.

As head of social strategy at WCG, a W2O Company, I am responsible for helping clients think through their content (what they want to say or narrative), social (where they want to say it) and paid media strategy (which content they want to amplify and in which channel - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.) Previously, I was Senior Vice President of Social Strategy at Edelman Digital where I consulted for Fortune 500 companies implementing integrated content and digital marketing strategies, globally.

I have worked for Silicon Valley companies like Hewlett Packard, Yahoo, and Intel building online communities before social media was even a thing. I am also an Adjunct Professor at San Jose State University and UC Berkeley teaching social business and social media strategy to PR/Marketing/Journalism students. My 2nd book, Your Brand: The Next Media Company, was released in October 2013. I served 8 years in the United States Marine Corps.

O ne of the innovations that makes the Social Tools Summit unique is the use of gamification to keep the dialogue interactive and fun. How often have we been to conferences where someone stands at a podium and drones on and on, making sure to include every possible buzzword and bit of technical jargon in the presentation. Not here. Though we will have expert speakers and power users dispensing wisdom, we'll "keep them honest" by awarding points for good presentations, comments, or predicting how the experts or Trender panels may respond to key questions posed to them. And we'll do it in real-time during the conference. The winner will be awarded the "Social Genius" trophy at the end of the day.
